Bexley City Schools Announces the District’s Leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Bexley City Schools named Marcelius Braxton as the district’s Leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Bexley Board of Education approved Braxton’s contract during a special board meeting on Tuesday, June 29.

“Mr. Braxton is a proven and engaging leader with a wealth of experience,” said Dr. Jason Fine, Bexley City Schools Superintendent. “His magnetic energy and palpable enthusiasm to amplify the voices of our students and families in all aspects of our work made him the stand-out candidate to lead our district forward. I am excited to work alongside him, our staff, students, and families as we continue our efforts to provide a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment for all.”

Braxton comes to Bexley City Schools from Capital University Law School where he currently serves as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. While at Capital University, he has flourished directly supporting students and staff in achieving success, breaking down barriers, and continuing to grow in DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). Since 2015, he has served in various teaching, leadership, and professional development roles in higher education with a focus on DEI initiatives.

Prior to his service in higher education, he practiced law and earned Bachelor’s degrees in Economics, Political Science, and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh, a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina, and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Missouri. Marcelius is also a published author, a sought-after presenter, and a respected leader.

As the Bexley City Schools’ Leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Mr. Braxton will work alongside students and staff to support provision of an equitable educational experience in each of the district’s five schools.  His work will include working directly with students and staff, overseeing an equity audit, leading the DEI Task Force, and assisting in the formation of additional student and community groups and clubs.

“I am ecstatic to be joining the Bexley City School District as the Leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” said Braxton. “I will be joining a community that is passionate and dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and I am excited to continue the fantastic work that is already being done. I look forward to bringing an open-minded, transparent, and student-focused approach to this position. We will work as a collective community to implement policies, procedures, and programs that create, maintain, and prioritize fairness and equity for everyone.”

Mr. Braxton’s selection for the role is the culmination of an in-depth review and interview process by the District. A rigorous and multi-phased interview process narrowed the pool of over 70 applicants to six for interviews with Dr. Fine. A final group of three participated in interviews with students, community members, and school faculty.

“We are grateful for the community members who participated throughout the interview process by submitting questions and feedback that assisted our district in hiring Mr. Braxton,” said Marlee Snowdon, Bexley City Schools Board of Education President. “We believe this work is critically important for our future and look forward to Mr. Braxton’s leadership as we continue to provide a high-quality, safe, and inclusive experience for all here in Bexley City Schools.”

Braxton will begin as the Leader of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on August 1, 2021.
