As high school, seniors are finishing high school and preparing for college, the David and Irene Cole Essay Contest provides a unique opportunity for students to consider a facet of their future university life. Asked to envision life as a college freshman, the essay of no more than 1,200 words, must describe how they will “perpetuate their own Jewish knowledge and practice as a college freshman, and why.”
Winners will receive up to $1,000 for submitting essays to the David and Irene Cole Essay Contest of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. Funds for the Cole Essay Contest are held at the Columbus Jewish Foundation. The contest is open to any Columbus area Jewish high school senior graduating this June in the class of 2018 and completed submissions are due by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. The winner will be announced and finalists at the Jewish Teen Awards Night in May at the Jewish Community Center.
The essay contest, sponsored by Stuart and Marilyn Cole, is aimed at challenging students to consider their future college Jewish experiences. “It is named in memory of my husband’s parents,” said Marilyn Cole, a retired clinical social worker from Jewish Family Services. According to Stuart Cole, an attorney retired from the Ohio Attorney General’s office, “My Father had strong beliefs about the importance of Jewish education that were shared by my Mother. Today, Jewish education and identity are an integral part of our lives and the lives of our three children and grandchildren. We take great pride in knowing that our children share our beliefs about the importance of passing on a strong Jewish identity to the next generation.”
