Montrose has worked with the Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Project since 2011. A staff developer from the Project helps move instructional practices forward and plan professional development tailored to the needs of Montrose faculty and students. The developer also assists teachers in analyzing assessments and determining what is working and what needs tweaking.
The current focus of the Best Practice is on the transition to the Common Core State Standards in Math and Language Arts and building common Units of Study for Reading and Writing at various grade levels. Staffers are aligning instruction with the Common Core through curriculum mapping and unit design. Next steps for 2013 - 2014, according the staff's report to the Bexley Board of Education, include continuing and increasing teacher professional development; considering different ways to arrange the school day to support interventions; building classroom libraries to engage and support all learners; and reviewing staffing needs to support interventions and subgroup learners.
